I Know
Future Music once ran a competition to remix a vocal a cappella used by Hybrid in one of their tracks. This was great - I didn't have many vocal samples that I could use in my tracks, and here was a complete song just waiting to be remixed!
I fired up Sound Studio Pro and my Yamaha DJX, and got to work. The result is not bad - musically there's quite a lot going on, and I feel that given my equipment and expertise it's quite polished. With hindsight though, I wish I had used more of the vocals rather than just the few lines I ended up using.
I should say at this point that my ropey old 133 MHz PC wasn't really up to the task of playing back the MIDI tracks at the same time as recording the output from the DJX as an audio track. The recording was nowhere near in time, so I fired up an even older computer (an Acorn A3010) that I had written a simple MIDI record/playback program for.
Once all the MIDI data was in the A3010, I set up the PC to record audio and then hit play on the A3010. Then finally I had to reposition the recorded track in Sound Studio Pro, to be in sync with the other audio tracks.
It all worked nicely, but unfortunately it was a hell of an overhead to go from the PC to the A301 and back just to record the track to a WAV! Because of this, I really do appreciate being able to click 'Export Song as Audio File' in Reason.
